When automobiles first came out, the biggest feature people were interested in was how safe they were. Without seat belts or any sort of collision protection, early vehicles were not very similar at all to today’s cars. The Toyota Tundra is a good example of what the modern commuter vehicle is like.

First introduced in the year two thousand, this truck is perhaps the very first full sized import built to the American utility vehicle aesthetic. Initially very similar in construction and design to the already popular Tacoma, this two door truck came standard with the then top of the line 3.4 liter V6 engine.

If that engine was not going to cut it, a larger power plant was also available. The upgraded engine boasted two hundred and thirty six horsepower from its four liter cylinder capacity. Future engine advances would ultimately produce a staggering two hundred and eighty two horsepower from a four point seven liter eight cylinder.

In 2006, Chicago’s auto show saw the unveiling of the new generation of these trucks. The new models were bigger and stronger than previous designs. The strength aesthetic was even built into the fender design, as they were intended to resemble a bulging bicep muscle.

There are over thirty different configurations to be enjoyed. There are three different bed lengths, three ways to configure the cab, four wheel bases, and the choice between automatic and manual transmission. With all of these basic options, it is not that difficult to see why the vehicle sells quite well in a variety of markets.

The biggest power plant currently available produces a respectable three hundred and eighty one horsepower from its eight cylinders. This is the same block manufactured for the Sequoia. A bolt on supercharger kit will increase this horsepower output to over five hundred.

You don’t necessarily have to work in construction or landscaping to have need of a utility vehicle. Safety is still one of the primary concerns when it comes to purchasing and operating a car. The size and rugged nature of these kinds of trucks can make them quite attractive to people.

Towing, hauling, or just driving around, the Toyota Tundra has won several awards during its first decade of service. Plans to announce a diesel version as well as a hybrid power engine are reportedly being discussed. Whatever the future holds for this particular make of utility vehicle, it seems reasonable to assume that it will continue to perform to expectations.
